At 00:51 hours the general tones sounded requesting Engine 3 and Rescue 3 to respond mutual aid to Cresskill for a reporting working house fire at 123 Truman Drive. En route Cresskill command upgraded the call to a 3rd Alarm fire with possible people trapped. Engine 3 arrived as the second due engine company with a crew of six firefighters under the command of Captain Banta and Lieutenant Molinaro. The crew was put to work immediately with the task of outside ventilation and assisting interior fire attack. Rescue 3 arrived 4th due to the job and was put to work as well assisting with interior fire attack. First due Cresskill Engine 5 encountered heavy fire conditions in the front foyer area of the home, extending from the first floor through the second floor into the attic. The home was a large mansion. Part of a large second floor landing at the top of the stair case collapsed into the first floor. Crews made an aggressive attack on the fire knocking down the bulk of it within minutes. Heavy smoke was still pushing from the eaves of the home so command assigned Rescue 3's crew to now assist in opening up the second floor ceilings and locating an access point to the attic. Additional mutual to the scene on the original "working fire" assignment was Tower 2 from Tenafly and a FAST Team from Demarest. The additional alarms brought apparatus from Alpine, Closter, Haworth, Harrington Park to the scene and New Milford to cover the firehouse. Dumont was released from the scene and returned to the borough shortly after 03:00 hours. Also on scene was Assistant Chief Molinaro (interior) and Chief Byrd (command post).
